May Lawn Care: Setting the Stage for Summer

May is when North Texas lawns should start finding their stride. With the cooler stretch we’ve had, some turf is running a little behind—but don’t worry. As temperatures climb, warm-season grasses like Bermuda will begin to green up and grow more consistently.

If you haven’t made your first fertilizer application yet, now is a good time to get that in place. Keep your rates in check—no more than one pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application. That guidance isn’t just a suggestion; it helps prevent fertilizer burn, reduces runoff, and keeps excess nutrients from feeding weeds instead of your lawn. Always read and follow the label instructions for best results.

Mowing practices matter just as much as fertilizing. Stick with the 1/3 rule: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Cutting too much in one pass can stress the plant and slow recovery, especially as we move toward hotter weather.

Try to avoid mowing when the lawn is still wet. It may seem harmless, but repeated mowing on damp soil can lead to compaction. Compacted soil limits root growth and reduces the lawn’s ability to handle summer heat.

Weeds are still active this time of year, especially broadleaf types like clover. Spot-treat as needed using a selective herbicide labeled for your turfgrass. Be sure to match the product to both the weed and the grass type, and follow all label directions carefully. Hand-pulling is always an option as well, especially for smaller infestations.

Finally, keep an eye on your own conditions while working outdoors. Warmer days are ahead, and it doesn’t take long to get overheated. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and plan heavier work for earlier in the day when possible.

A little attention now goes a long way toward a healthier lawn through the summer months.
