Spotlight on . . . Leona Kwait, Collin County Master Gardener

By Dawn Oldfield, Public Relations Chairperson
There is a saying that a gardener grows patient and learns to appreciate and forgive the ever-changing season Mother Nature brings us. Master Gardener Leona Kwait grins, “I became a Master Gardener in 2015 because I loved gardening, but was new to it and kept killing more plants then I kept alive. Since the Master Gardener program offers such great training I decided to join. I also wanted to have a community of other gardeners to be able to discuss gardening.”
Now, the former US Marine is the busy owner of a landscape design company. She offers 3D CAD designed plans and specializes in water-wise and pollinator friendly gardens. The knowledgeable plant enthusiast shares, “I love working with and educating people who are interested in learning to garden. I also love to volunteer at the plants sales and Garden Show to talk to people.”
Leona says, “As a practicing full-time landscape designer I try to use my knowledge I’ve gained from my profession. With this knowledge, and the knowledge I’ve gained from being a Master Gardener, I can often help the public and even fellow Master Gardeners find ‘the right plant for the right place’ and implement the best local horticultural practices.”
Leona serves on the Garden Advisors Committee along with volunteering at some of the larger CCMGA events. Leona says, “The Garden Show and plant sales are always a treat for me to interact with the public and give back to the community and the organization.”
CCMGA offers so much not only to the community, but to its members as well. Leona explains, “People who love plants like myself, are always a delight to chat with. I love catching up with old friends before the monthly meetings or meeting someone new and chatting away in line for the always delicious pot lucks!”
Leona adds, “Come to the monthly meetings as much as possible. The guest speakers are always so interesting and educational. Plus, you get the opportunity to meet new people you haven’t met before.”
