What's Happening in the Gardens this Month (May 2020)?

Spring is approaching and the vegetable garden team and volunteers at Myers Park Research and Demonstration Gardens are preparing to plant our 2020 crops. Our mission is to grow plants using strictly Earth-Kind® methods and provide the community with information about which crops will be successful in our area.
There are three planting seasons, spring, summer and fall. Our harvests have produced hundreds of pounds of vegetables, which we donate to “McKinney Roots,” our local food pantry. Volunteers germinate seeds at home to transplant and we also direct seed in the gardens. We provide the highest quality of produce using integrated pest management techniques to avoid pest problems before they occur and employ water conservation methods necessary for our environment.
At harvest time, we count and weigh our vegetables to determine which will grow well. Throughout the year, at our many information booths and events we provide this information to the public. As a team we often make recipes for sharing to enjoy the fruits of our labor. After all, let’s have fun and enjoy what we grow!
Our onions are in and the lettuce, cabbage, spinach and peas will be planted soon, followed by our summer crop of tomatoes, peppers, beans and squash.
Come visit us at our many events and you too can be successful in having a special garden of your own. Remember grow what you like to eat, grow more to share and grow what is successful in this county.
