"The Well-Gardened Mind" Presented by Dr. Sue Stuart-Smith
Registration will open May 1. Watch this space.
The garden is often seen as a refuge, a place to forget worldly cares, removed from the “real” life that lies outside. When we get our hands in the earth we connect with the cycle of life in nature through which destruction and decay are followed by regrowth and renewal. Gardening is one of the quintessential nurturing activities and yet we understand so little about it. The Well-Gardened Mind provides a new perspective on the power of gardening to change people’s lives. Here, Sue Stuart-Smith investigates the many ways in which mind and garden can interact and explores how the process of tending a plot can be a way of sustaining an innermost self.
About Our Speaker:
Dr Sue Stuart-Smith, a prominent psychiatrist and psychotherapist, worked in the United Kingdom's National Health Service for many years, becoming the lead clinician for psychotherapy in Hertfordshire. Her bestselling book, The Well-Gardened Mind, published in 2020 was a Times and Sunday Times book of the year. It has since been translated into eighteen languages.
Along with her husband, Tom Stuart-Smith, the celebrated garden designer, she has founded a not-for-profit initiative called The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health which incorporates a unique living Plant Library and is based in an old orchard near their home in Hertfordshire. The project provides resources for local schools and mental health charities, offering opportunities to connect with nature for those who have least access.

Container Gardening with Howard Nemeroff
Howard Nemeroff is respected as one of the most accomplished professional container artists in the United States.
This year, Nemeroff is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his plant-care and container-gardening business, Plant Parenting, Inc. In 2025, Digging In Association, a professional organization for container garden designers, honored Nemeroff with their Deep Roots Award for the significant role he has played in shaping and strengthening the professional container gardening industry and community. His creative designs often have been featured in Fine Gardening Magazine.
Howard’s artistic approach to working with nature began early. At age 16, while working in the produce department at Kroger, he caught shoppers' attention by combining a macramé hanger and a large pumpkin, which he lined with clear plastic and filled with black goldfish to create a Halloween aquarium suspended over a display island.
Howard began container gardening before it was recognized as an industry. From the beginning, he has endeavored to use plants with an artist’s eye and a horticulturist’s knowledge. As he learned new horticultural practices, he brought these lessons to life in unique ways. An innovator with a keen interest in tropical plants, he took them to new heights in non-tropical Chicago, creating amazing container gardens.
Though always looking for new plants to utilize in his palette, Howard focuses on artistic presentation, as much as he does plant material. His designs are mechanically inspired and incorporate both hidden and visible structure. Whether he uses artistic frames to embellish a look or uses an internal mechanism to "defy gravity," his style is sought after and appreciated by his clients.
He is an excellent communicator who enjoys sharing his love for creating unique and wonderful designs
