Earth-Kind® Water Conservation

One of the guiding principles of Earth-Kind® is to conserve water while still enjoying a beautiful landscape.  It is estimated that 25% of urban household water is used to water lawns.  Therefore, it is essential that the public employs measures that conserve landscape water demands.

  • Plant grass that requires less water (Buffalo requires +/- 25" per year; Bermuda +/- 40" per year; Zoysia +/- 45" per year; St. Augustine +/- 50" per year
  • Keep your system turned off and only water after you determine that water is required. Employ an on-line irrigation calculator to determine how much water to use on your turf.
  • Do not over fertilize turf (obtain a soil sample and only use what is required)
  • Mow grass high; especially in hot, dry weather
  • Leave clippings on grass for mulch and to reduce water requirements
  • Plant low-water demand plants and shrubs
  • Water in evenings or early mornings
  • Do not water when the wind is over 10 mph
  • Conduct routine irrigation audits and promptly repair leaks, bad heads.  Realign heads when necessary. Learn how to conduct an irrigation system audit.

There are two primary types of irrigation.  Conventional, above ground sprinkler systems and low-volume systems (also known as drip systems).  Wherever possible, use low-volume irrigation which is much more efficient at directing water directly to the base of plants.

Group plant material that have similar water needs.  Use our on-line plant selector to assist you in selecting appropriate plant material for your area.
