Registration for the 2016 Collin County Master Gardener Training Course is Now Open
By Sandi Konrath, Collin County Master Gardener
The fact that you are reading the Garden Wise Gazette or visiting our website tells one that you are interested in gardening, and most likely want to learn more. If you reside in Collin County, the Collin County Master Gardeners Association offers a wonderful opportunity for you to increase your knowledge and share that knowledge by volunteering in your community by becoming a Master Gardener. The Master Gardener program is a volunteer development program offered by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. This program encourages Earth-Kind® gardening principles, A&M research findings, outreach in the community (including youth and adult education), and much more.
The 2016 Master Gardener Training Class consists of 12 weeks of instruction on consecutive Tuesdays, beginning August 30th and ending November 15th. Classes are taught by Horticulture Agents, Extension Specialists, and local experts who, together with a gifted group of Master Gardeners, offer more than 65 hours of instruction.
In addition, there will be hands on classes where you get to “play in the dirt;” tour the Research and Demonstration Gardens at Myers Park; and visit some very cool nurseries. The added bonus is that you will be with like-minded classmates and surrounded by Master Gardeners who are there to help and support you in your quest to become a Master Gardener.
An informal, informational orientation will be held on July 28, 2016, at 10:00 am, at The Landing at Myers Park and Event Center, 7117 County Road 166, McKinney, TX 75071. This meeting will provide you an opportunity to visit with current Master Gardeners, and will be followed by our CCMGA monthly meeting, which you are invited to attend.
The downloadable 2016 Application Packet as well as information about the program, cost and application requirements is available at /about-us/master-gardener-training.aspx.
If you have questions about the program, please contact the Collin County AgriLife Extension Office at (972) 548-4232. Hope to see you in class on August 30th!!
